Termite Questions and Answers
Termites damage around 600,000 homes in the United States each year and cause an average of $30 billion in damage to structures each year just in the United States.
Termites eat homes that contain wood but also eat other materials such as plaster, metal, siding, and more. Termites start by eating the exterior of your home and then start feeding on cabinets, floors, ceilings, and wooden furniture inside of the home. As you can see termites are no light subject. They can eat your home to an unrepairable state before you even know it. It is much more cost effective to prevent termites in the first place than than to deal with the extensive or irreparable damage that can happen if not detected early enough.
There are two types of termites that cause damage in Kauai, Hawaii. There are drywood termites and subterranean termites on the island of Kauai.
Drywood termites build their colonies within wooden structures that they feed on. They are found in walls, exterior siding, furniture, attics, and more. You may not even know you have drywood termites until they have burrowed so deeply that their are visible maze like tunnels and wood deposit piles in the area. You are also able to identify drywood termites by looking for winged insects. Drywood termites can often be mistaken for winged ants but it is better to be safe than sorry. If you see any of these signs you may have drywood termites in your home or structure then contact a termite specialist immediately.
Subterranean termites dwell underground in loose, damp soil that is common in Kauai. Signs of subterranean damage are not very obvious. Interior damage may not be apparent until their is a full blown infestation. Subterranean termite damage looks similar to water damage. Outward signs of termite damage include buckling wood, swollen floors, ceilings, and other areas that look warped or distorted in your home. Termite infestations may also put off a smell that is similar to mildew or mold.
The average termite colony can eat about one foot of a 2x4 in six months, but certain species of termites can eat wood at much faster pace. Termites eat the wood while also created tunnels so they can grow their colonies. Each colony generally has about 60,000 termites in it but can get much larger depending on conditions.
If you think you may have a termite infestation then call a termite specialist immediately to assess the situation before it's too late.

Termite extermination is generally priced per square foot or cubic foot based on the structure being treated. The price per square foot ranges from $1-4 per square foot depending on the home or structure.
Kauai Termite Treatment Methods
Termite Heat Treatment
Termite heat treatment involves elevating the buildings structural temperature to 150 ºF for at least 12 hours to confirm complete termite extermination. The core temperature of the wood is elevated above 130 ºF because drywood termites die in 6 minutes at 130 ºF. The heat is ducted in from indirect fired heaters on the exterior of the structure and a convection current is created with high powered air movers to circulate the heat evenly around the building. Thermal imaging cameras are used to confirm lethal temperatures are reached throughout the entire building.
Termite Fumigation
Termite fumigation is performed by placing a tarp of the entire building and sealing it off from the ground with a firehose. Vikane Gas (sulfuryl flouride gas) is pumped into the structure and then circulated around with air movers. The gas then penetrates the wood in the structure and kills the termites by affecting their nervous system. The tarps are then removed from the building. Occupants need to be out of the structure for two nights and three days.
Termite Spot Treatment
Termite spot treatment is performed by drilling holes in infested wood and then injecting orange oil into affected spots. Holes may need to be drilled in your walls, floors, beams, furniture, and any other wood that may be infested with drywood termites. The orange oil is injected through these holes and diffused throughout the holes bored out by the drywood termites. The orange oil is supposed to then kill the termites because of the D-limonene that breaks down their exoskeleton.
